Bible Verses About Strength

Scripture never tells the weary to find strength in themselves. It points them to the Lord, who “giveth power to the faint” (Isaiah 40:29).

What the Bible says

Isaiah says that “to them that have no might he increaseth strength” (Isaiah 40:29), and he adds that “Even the youths shall faint and be weary” (Isaiah 40:30). Natural strength runs out, even at its best. The promise is for those who wait upon the Lord: they “shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles” (Isaiah 40:31). Strength in the Bible is not something we store up; it is something God gives, day by day, to those who look to Him.

Paul learned this through a weakness the Lord did not take away. Christ told him, “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9). So Paul could say, “when I am weak, then am I strong” (2 Corinthians 12:10). Our weakness is not the end of the story. It is the very place where the power of Christ rests upon us, so that the glory goes to Him and not to us.

That is why the command is “be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might” (Ephesians 6:10), not in our own. David sang, “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped” (Psalm 28:7). Strength and trust go together. And when body and heart give way, Asaph could still say, “God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever” (Psalm 73:26).

All of this comes to us through Christ. Paul wrote, “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me” (Philippians 4:13), whether he had plenty or was in need. The Lord says, “Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit” (Zechariah 4:6). Come to Jesus as you are, weak and weary, and lean on Him. Even in sorrow the believer is not left empty, for “the joy of the LORD is your strength” (Nehemiah 8:10).
