Bible Verses About Marriage

Marriage begins with God, not with us. Jesus said, “What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Mark 10:9).

What the Bible says

In the beginning God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him” (Genesis 2:18). Then He joined them: “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh” (Genesis 2:24). When Jesus taught on marriage, He went straight back to this beginning, for marriage is God’s design and not man’s invention.

Paul shows that marriage points beyond itself: “This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church” (Ephesians 5:32). Husbands are to love their wives “even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it” (Ephesians 5:25), and wives are to submit “as unto the Lord” (Ephesians 5:22). Together they are “heirs together of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7). A Christian marriage is a living picture of the gospel.

Love in marriage is the love Scripture describes: “Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not” (1 Corinthians 13:4). It means “Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye” (Colossians 3:13). The forgiveness we have received in Christ becomes the forgiveness we give at home, day by day.

Marriage is to be guarded and honoured: “Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled” (Hebrews 13:4). Its love is meant to be strong and lasting, for “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it” (Song of Solomon 8:7). When husband and wife both lean upon the Lord, they know the truth of the word, “a threefold cord is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:12).

Wives and husbands, like the church and Christ

    Love strong as death
