Who I Am in Christ: Bible Verses

Scripture tells believers who they are by telling them whose they are. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

What the Bible says

In Christ you are a child of God. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12). “For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3:26). And a child is also an heir: “thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ” (Galatians 4:7).

In Christ you are chosen and accepted. God “hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world” (Ephesians 1:4) and “hath made us accepted in the beloved” (Ephesians 1:6), “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins” (Ephesians 1:7). Peter adds, “ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people” (1 Peter 2:9). None of this is earned; all of it is grace.

In Christ the old life has died. “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me” (Galatians 2:20). So Scripture says, “reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:11), for “ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3). Your past no longer defines you; Christ does.

In Christ you belong to God. “For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s” (1 Corinthians 6:20). You lack nothing before Him, “And ye are complete in him” (Colossians 2:10). And the best is still ahead: “we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:2).
