What the Bible says
Guilt and shame entered the world together. After Adam and Eve sinned, “they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together” (Genesis 3:7). Then they hid. Adam said, “I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself” (Genesis 3:10). Yet God came looking for them: “Where art thou?” (Genesis 3:9). And He covered them Himself: “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them” (Genesis 3:21).
Hiding sin only deepens the weight. David wrote, “When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long” (Psalm 32:3). Relief came when he spoke: “I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin” (Psalm 32:5). The promise stands for every believer: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Our guilt was laid on Christ. “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5). “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). He also bore our shame, for He “endured the cross, despising the shame” (Hebrews 12:2). And “the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
So the verdict over the believer is settled: “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). God has removed our sins “As far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:12). Shame lifts as we look to Him: “They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed” (Psalm 34:5). Now we may “draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience” (Hebrews 10:22).
14 verses, King James Version
Isaiah 53:5–6
He was wounded for our transgressions
5But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
2 Corinthians 5:21
Made the righteousness of God in Him
21For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
Hebrews 10:22
Hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience
22Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.
1 John 1:7
His blood cleanseth from all sin
7But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
1 John 1:9
Confess, and He forgives and cleanses
9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Romans 8:1
Free from condemnation in Christ
1There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Psalms 103:10–12
Sins removed as far as east from west
10He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.
Psalms 32:1–5
The relief of confession
1Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. 2Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile. 3When I kept silence, my bones waxed old through my roaring all the day long. 4For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: my moisture is turned into the drought of summer. Selah. 5I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.
Isaiah 1:18
Stains washed white
18Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
Micah 7:18–19
Sins thrown into the sea
18Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. 19He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.
Ephesians 1:7
Forgiven through His blood
7In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
Colossians 2:13–14
The debt nailed to the cross
13And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; 14Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
Psalms 34:5
Look to Him and shame lifts
5They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.
Psalms 51:10–12
A prayer for a new start
10Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. 11Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. 12Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
