Bible Verses for Grief and Loss

Grief is real, and the Lord does not ask you to hide it. Jesus said, “Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted” (Matthew 5:4).

What the Bible says

At the grave of Lazarus, though He was about to raise him, “Jesus wept” (John 11:35). The Son of God did not stand far off from sorrow. Isaiah foretold that He would be “a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3), and “Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows” (Isaiah 53:4). When you grieve, you are not alone. The One who weeps with you is the One who bore sin and death at the cross.

The Lord draws near to the broken. “The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart” (Psalm 34:18). “He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds” (Psalm 147:3). David even said that God keeps his tears: “put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?” (Psalm 56:8). Scripture gives room to mourn, for there is “A time to weep … a time to mourn” (Ecclesiastes 3:4). Tears are not a lack of faith.

Christians still grieve, but not without hope. Paul writes, “that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope” (1 Thessalonians 4:13). The reason is the resurrection: “if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him” (1 Thessalonians 4:14). Jesus told Martha, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live” (John 11:25). Then He asked, “Believest thou this?” (John 11:26).

God comforts us so that we can comfort others. He is “the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation” (2 Corinthians 1:3–4). For now, “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning” (Psalm 30:5). And Scripture promises a day when “God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying” (Revelation 21:4). Bring your sorrow to Christ, who has conquered the grave.
