The story

Peter wrote to believers who were scattered in many places (1 Peter 1:1). They were going through hard times and felt heavy-hearted (1 Peter 1:6). Peter told them to humble themselves under God’s mighty hand, and at the right time God would lift them up (1 Peter 5:6). He said, “Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you” (1 Peter 5:7). We can give God every worry, big or small.

Peter also told them to stay alert. The devil prowls around “as a roaring lion,” looking for someone to destroy (1 Peter 5:8). We must stand against him, firm in our faith, knowing other believers face troubles too (1 Peter 5:9). After a little while of suffering, the God of all grace will make His people strong and steady (1 Peter 5:10). “To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen” (1 Peter 5:11).

Read it in the Bible: 1 Peter 5:6–11 (KJV)

6Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

Jesus Gives Us Rest

We can cast every care on God. Jesus invites everyone who is tired and weighed down to come to Him, and He gives them rest.

Matthew 11:28

A 45-minute lesson plan

5 minWelcome and pray. Greet each child by name and pray: Give God the things we are worried about.
10 minThe story. Play the story film: each verse appears on screen in the King James Version while the scene plays. Pause to ask what happens next.
10 minTalk about it. Ask the three questions below. Then ask: “God cares about everything that worries us.” What does that mean for us?
5 minMemory verse. Say 1 Peter 5:7 together, covering one word at a time until the children can say it alone.
10 minActivity. Younger children color the coloring page while you retell the story; older children do the class sheet (memory-verse fill-in, word search and questions).
5 minPray and send home. Pray together and send the sheet home so families can talk about the first question this week.
  • Preschool: keep it short and physical. Act out the story, use a simple prop, and repeat the big idea in one sentence.
  • Elementary: let children find the passage in their own Bibles. Ask “who, what, where” questions first, then “why.”
  • Preteens: read the verses before and after the passage, and ask how this story fits the whole story of the Bible.

Unload the Backpack

You need: A backpack stuffed with crumpled papers marked as worries (lost toy, a test, a scary dream), a basket

  1. A child puts on the heavy backpack and tries to hop around. It’s hard!
  2. On “Cast your care on Him!”, they take out each worry, name it and toss it into God’s basket.
  3. Feel how light it is now. Let everyone have a turn.

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”

Worry Snowball Fight

You need: Paper, pens

  1. Everyone writes one worry on paper, with no name, and crumples it into a snowball.
  2. Have a snowball fight for one minute!
  3. Then everyone picks up one snowball, reads it quietly and prays for that person this week.

God cares about every worry. We help carry each other’s burdens by praying.

Pray

Give God the things we are worried about.
