The lessons: 6 stories about the book of 1 Kings

Solomon Asks for Wisdom
1 Kings 3:3–28 · story film
Young King Solomon loved the LORD. At Gibeon the LORD appeared to him in a dream by night and said, “Ask what I shall give thee,” and Solomon asked for an understanding heart to judge God’s people well. God was pleased and gave him a wise and an understanding heart, and soon, when two women both claimed the same baby, Solomon gave the child to its true mother, and all Israel saw that the wisdom of God was in him.
Big idea: God gives wisdom to those who ask Him.
Memory verse:
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
James 1:5 (KJV)Ask: What did God say to Solomon in the dream? “Ask what I shall give thee” (1 Kings 3:5).
Game: Riddle Me Wise (about 10 minutes)

The Glory Fills the Temple
1 Kings 8:1–11 · 8:22–30 · story film
King Solomon finished building a beautiful house for the LORD in Jerusalem. The priests carried the ark of the covenant into the most holy place, under the wings of the cherubims, and the cloud of the glory of the LORD filled the house so that the priests could not stand to minister. Then Solomon spread forth his hands toward heaven and prayed, “LORD God of Israel, there is no God like thee,” and asked God to hear and forgive His people when they prayed.
Big idea: There is no God like our God, and He hears us when we pray.
Memory verse:
I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.
Psalm 122:1 (KJV)Ask: What was inside the ark of the covenant? Nothing but the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb (1 Kings 8:9).
Game: Fill the House (about 10 minutes)

Ravens Feed Elijah
1 Kings 17:1–7 · story film
Elijah told wicked King Ahab that there would be no dew nor rain for years, but according to God’s word. Then the LORD sent Elijah to hide by the brook Cherith, and every morning and every evening the ravens brought him bread and flesh, and he drank of the brook. God took care of His servant in a lonely place, just as He had promised.
Big idea: God takes care of those who trust and obey Him.
Memory verse:
But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:19 (KJV)Ask: What did Elijah tell King Ahab? There would be no dew nor rain these years, but according to his word (1 Kings 17:1).
Game: Raven Delivery (about 10 minutes)

The Widow’s Meal and Oil
1 Kings 17:8–24 · story film
God sent Elijah to a poor widow in Zarephath who had only a handful of meal and a little oil left for herself and her son. Elijah said, “Fear not,” and asked her to make him a little cake first, for God promised that the barrel of meal would not waste nor the cruse of oil fail until the rain came. She obeyed, and they ate many days; and later, when her son fell sick and stopped breathing, the LORD heard Elijah’s prayer and the child revived.
Big idea: When we trust God and share, He provides all we need.
Memory verse:
O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
Psalm 34:8 (KJV)Ask: What was the widow doing at the gate of the city? Gathering sticks to bake her last meal for herself and her son (1 Kings 17:10–12).
Game: The Jar That Never Ran Out (about 10 minutes)

Fire on Mount Carmel
1 Kings 18:17–39 · story film
Israel had turned to the false god Baal, so Elijah gathered all the people to Mount Carmel and asked, “How long halt ye between two opinions?” The prophets of Baal cried to their god from morning until noon, but there was no voice, nor any that answered. Elijah built the LORD’s altar of twelve stones, had it soaked with water three times, and prayed, and the fire of the LORD fell and consumed it all, and the people fell on their faces and said, “The LORD, he is the God.”
Big idea: The LORD is the one true God, so we should follow Him with all our heart.
Memory verse:
And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD, he is the God.
1 Kings 18:39 (KJV)Ask: What question did Elijah ask the people? “How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him” (1 Kings 18:21).
Game: Fire from Heaven (about 10 minutes)

A Still Small Voice
1 Kings 19:1–18 · story film
After the fire fell on Mount Carmel, Queen Jezebel threatened Elijah, and he ran into the wilderness, tired and afraid. God sent an angel with bread and water, then met him at Horeb, the mount of God, not in the wind, the earthquake or the fire, but in a still small voice, and told him that seven thousand in Israel had not bowed to Baal.
Big idea: God cares for us when we are tired and afraid, and we are never alone.
Memory verse:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
1 Kings 19:12 (KJV)Ask: What did the angel bring Elijah under the juniper tree? A cake baken on the coals and a cruse of water (1 Kings 19:6).
Game: Listen for the Whisper (about 10 minutes)
